COMMITTEE REPORTSMEMBERSHIP AND PR BBQ Sign - from the last BBQ at Bunnings we now have a sign asking for new members to join us Advert in the Armstrong Creek News is to be pursued. In the editorial the activities in the Annual Report can be listed. The advert to have a catch phrase that attracts attention. Mention of support given to both Lutheran and Grove Colleges. Seek approval from the Board to finance the advert cost of $330. COMMUNITY SERVICE Discussion of the current situation re the Foundation 61 project. Hopeful that planning permits (so far costing over $140K) will be issued shortly. Garden beds project at Opal South Valley - need for some landscaping and/or paving to be done before second bed can be placed in position and filled. Hopefully this will be completed before spring planting is possible. Cheryle has suggested that the Club investigate a project which has been developed to reduce pollution in the bays and oceans. More details to come. YOUTH AND VOCATIONAL SERVICES Mock job interviews are to be conducted at Grovedale College early in September. Members are asked to indicate their availability to Jordan . The Board will again be asked to finance the end of year awards to students at both Geelong Lutheran College and Grovedale College (approximately $2000). Discussion took place on the support given to RYLA, and the need to find time to hear Daniel Koneski's report from his experience this year in April. INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE REPORT The 3 members in attendance agreed that donations to Shelterbox and Aquabox be considered. The next Geelong Rotaries International Group (GRIG) meeting was rescheduled to August 1st. As both Lesley and Leon will be away, Jan will endeavor to represent the Club. We remain committed to the goal of supporting a Global Grant if the group can find a suitable major project. Lesley will maintain contact with Binod (RC of Pokhara-Fishtail) to see if they are considering large project requiring a Global Grant. An email had been received from Kathy Ryan (Corio Bay RC) thanking us for supporting Romain Mirindi's school project in the Congo and informing us that they had been successful in getting a District Grant for that project. |

Members survey - what did we say?![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paul provided the summary below of the results of the recent members survey. We had 22 club members return their answers to our survey request and this is a majority of Club members and therefore the results will be upheld by the Board. With so many members voting we received lots of different opinions - which is great - and everybodys' opinions are valued. Our main objective is to try to make the Club more inviting to new members and an awesome sustainable club in the future. Here are some of the results: 1/ How well do you enjoy our meetings? 14 Good- 7 Very Good Comments- What we don’t like are: 1/ Kitchen making so much noise when they are cleaning up. 2/ Meetings and reports not quick enough. 3/ Members talking during reports 4/ Some members moving into larger lounge after meals. 5/ Not enough Projects. 6/ Meetings not organised. 7/ Meetings to regimented. 8/ Some meals and guest speakers. What we do like: 1/ Fellowship 2/ Guest speakers 3/Variety of speakers 4/ Fine session. 5/ Vocational visits to workplaces. 6/ Projects we do. 7/ Sitting next to a different member each week. 2/ Happy moving main Club meetings to 2nd & 4th weeks of the month. 14 members voted – yes 7 members voted - no 1 member undecided Two meetings a month may be more attractive for new members. The other meetings are optional . We will still be having a social meeting on the first week and on the 3rd week will be our planning night (previously Club Assembly) and if there is a 5th week in the month we will discuss this. 3/ Most members were very happy to promote our Club in a very good way, again the idea that we meet at a retirement home came up but why can’t we tell them the address without mentioning Rice Village. 4/ Our venue is still very well received as a meeting venue 13 members voting very good, 8 voting good and 1 undecided. 5/ Meals received a variety of votes and we are in the process of talking to the kitchen so we keep up the good results. 6/ The size of meals received good results as well and those who cannot eat the whole meal please don’t feel guilty if you cannot eat it all. 7A/ Do we drop the toast at the start of the meeting? 14 members voting yes and 6 against. 7B/ Do we drop the fines session? 14 members voted no and 5 members voted yes so the fine session stays but we may streamline it a little. 8/ Would Club members like to be able to vote for Rotarian of the year? 15 members voting yes and 7 members voting no but the final choice will stay with the President, 9/ The choice of trimming the Committees from 6 to 4 was voted in. 21 members voting yes and 1 voting no. This will enable more members to be on committees with us then being able to choose a Deputy to help when the Director is absent. 10/ Communication from the Board regarding information on Board voting, who we donate our money to or anything that influences the Club is not reported as good as it could. So we will work to inform all Club members of any outcomes from these meetings. 11/ Do you feel pressured to attend meetings? 20 members voted no, 2 voting yes, 12/ Do you feel pressured to volunteer for fundraising events? 17 members voted no and 5 voted yes. No member should feel pressured. Sometimes we are under the pump to fill spots. If you do not want to help there is no problem. 13/ With our Fundraising activities do you think our mix is right? Due to the answers on this we really need to have a big discussion as the votes went this way, 11 members think it was just right, 8 members think we do too much and 2 members feel we do not do enough. The main consideration was the Aldi BBQ, do we keep it going? This is a discussion for another night. 14/How often do you read the bulletin? 17 members advised weekly and 4 advised fortnightly. 15/ What part of the bulletin is most useful. Upcoming events won out but most areas of the bulletin were looked at. 16/ The Bulletin being published on the 2nd & 4th weeks. 11 members were ok with this, 7 members want weekly. 17/ 11 members have said they will help supply Information for the bulletin, and 8 said no, so look forward bigger and more informative bulletins in the future. 18/ Anyone wanting to be President elect 2019? Most of the Club said no - but there was some interest. So you will have to wait and see. 19/Comments about running the Club. We had a few varied ideas and these will be looked at by the Board. Thank you all for your input to the survey. Please don’t be upset if things you voted for were not taken up but we are hoping the things decided on are going to help build the Club from strength to strength. A big thank you to Peter C for putting the survey together and thank you to Christine for collating all the answers so we could have it ready for our meeting last Wednesday night. |

Grovedale Waurn Ponds Rotary Making a differenceCambodia - An adventure with a purpose! ![]() Lesley Goode has just returned from a Rotary trip to Cambodia and shared her experiences with us last Wednesday night. The trip, orgainsed by Bryan Humphrey – ex President of Geelong East Rotary Club was offered to District 9780 Rotarians to experience first hand the culture and friendship of Cambodians and to see the results of the recent District water project. District 9780 and 22 supporting clubs were successful in gaining a Global Grant to provide clean water to about 4000 people. The project was worth $US56,234. 10 Rotarians and 2 Rotaractors went to Cambodia ( 5 Rotary Clubs – Highton, Geelong E, Grovedale, Colac West and Ballarat plus Warracknabeal Rotaract) Some of the achievements of the project and highlights of the trip were:
The group had an opportunity to have some fun and tour the many sights of Cambodia. Lesley concluded saying that it was a fascinating trip, very interesting and rewarding seeing our District's project first hand. It really proves that Rotary can make a difference! |

Committee UpdatesDirectors Report – Community Services: 14/3/18 Present: Paul Desbrowe-Annear – Acting Director, Graham Perkins, Dawn Renfrey. As most of the committee were not present at the assembly it was hard to know what had been discussed at previous meetings, but some input advised that the committee is in action on a tree planting project, with this info on where and when to be advised. Paul with the consent of Ineke Thornton -Director, has approached the developers of the new Wandana subdivision (next to Ceres lookout at the top of Barrabool Rd) to keep Drewan park as a Rotary park when it is redeveloped. Drewan park was a combined project of 3 Rotary clubs, Grovedale, Highton and Belmont, we are yet to get a reply from the developer. Paul will advise as soon as he hears from them. Fundraising Report 14/3/18 Present: Director Bob Arnup and Paul Desbrowe-Annear Fundraising all going well. We have had a few BBQ’s lately at both Bunnings and Aldi Grovedale with good profit coming in for our efforts. Bob has just been to another Bunnings meeting where we received 3 more BBQ dates over the next few months. Bar is running well with Mick doing a great job. Remainder of Committee reports to be submitted. |

Humans in Geelong...a team of volunteers telling the stories of locals who are making a difference![]() Last Wednesday, Jackie Bennett spoke to us about a group called 'Humans in Geelong'. This group interviews Geelong locals who are making a difference and publishes their stories on facebook and the web. Go to the links below and have a read for yourselves. I did and they were terrific stories. In Oct this year they will be having their 2nd Expo as last year's expo was so successful. Put it in your diaries - should be a good event with many inspirational stories to be told. If you happen to know someone that they could write a story about - please contact Jackie - she would be very pleased to hear from you. Copy of Grovedale Waurn Ponds Rotary Making a difference!![]() This year I am going to try to publish stories from each of the service areas (ie Youth, International, Community etc). I think it is important that we update our members - especially our new members on the activities we are supporting and the good work that is happening. So I am putting the call out to members to draft stories so they can be published in the bulletin and if suitable, also on the face book page. District 9780 trip to Cambodia. Next Thursday 1st February, Lesley Goode is travelling to Cambodia with 11 other District 9780 Rotarians. Bryan Humphries (Geelong East) has provided the opportunity to visit the water project in Veal Veang to which our Club made a contribution in the past. On Friday 2nd February, we are attending the meeting of the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh. Our club has kindly donated US$150 to the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh Books for Children project. This involves providing books for classrooms and libraries aiming particularly at the 5 – 10 year old age group. Lesley said she will send photos of the meeting and water project and then report on the trip when she returns. We wish Lesley well in her travels. Great to see our club represented on this trip. ![]() This year I am going to try to publish stories from each of the service areas (ie Youth, International, Community etc). Having problems thinking of gift for Christmas?![]() With the Christmas rush now on and the shops full of gifts, glitz and ‘stuff’, have you got the time, energy and motivation to go shopping for Christmas gifts that might be the wrong size, shape, colour, unappreciated, unwanted, superfluous or quietly discarded after the Christmas glow fades….? If this sounds like you, then solve the problem easily through the Rotary Club of Grovedale Waurn Ponds’ Gifting Program and buy a gift that will be really needed, appreciated, useful and possibly save lives. Which type of gift would you prefer to give? Make a donation to one of Rotary’s many projects as a gift on behalf of someone else. You will receive a card to give to your recipient to indicate what you have done. There will be no doubt they will be impressed by such a humanitarian gift that will improve the lives of those less fortunate - and it comes with the assurance that 100% of your monetary gift will reach the Rotary project of your choice. What better gift could you give to embrace the spirit of Christmas? – but remember, such gifts via the Gifting Program are also suitable for weddings, anniversaries, bereavements and other occasions throughout the year. At this time of year though, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU, In the hope that your generous donation will also mean a HAPPIER LIFE ALL THROUGH THE YEAR FOR SOMEONE ELSE. |

chickens chickens chickens ...and more chickens![]() Last Wednesday night, we had the return visit and presentation from the Lutheran College students and staff who visited Vanuatu this year. I have to say that the presentation was fantastic and big thanks go to Kiara Miller, Brooke O'Brien, Rene Pirrottina and Sharlene Tattersall for helping GWP Rotary members feel connected to the 'Chicken Coop' project. The students worked hard at Lorevulka Primary School and the rural training centre to build a chicken coup with the local people. The idea was reviewed by the local people and they decided that this would be a worthwhile project. Our club provided a donation which enabled the purchasing of the materials, feed for the chickens and some chickens. From all the reports, the project and the visit was successful on many levels and we were very happy to support it in a small way. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

We have been asked to provide support on the following dates
Friday 30th Sept.
I will seek support over the coming weeks.
Lesley's year in Review.
The year in review 2015-16
As I said in my speech last year, I took on the President’s role with some trepidation as I was/am aware of the importance and esteem that is attached to this job. I am not sure that I have met people’s expectations - I know I have raised a few eyebrows implementing a few changes but we have had an interesting and full program and considerable achievements along the way.
Whereas in the past members priorities were family and work and then Rotary – now we also have to factor in holidays and this has made a huge impact on our attendance and productivity. This was/is something we now have to accommodate in our planning. As I said last year, we do have to respect, accept and celebrate the level of participation a member or friend can offer. When in Geelong our members do work very hard and the small change to our meeting schedule – one meeting free week per month is an acknowledgement of the dedication and commitment members make. Our meeting free week, was an outcome of our Club Visioning process and I do want to thank PDG’s Cathy and Jane for leading us through this process.
The challenge of changing priorities is not unique to our Club and it is pleasing that Geelong Rotary Clubs are now working together on a number of projects. Together we can make a much bigger impact. We contributed to the Barwon Health Patient Transport project. We supported the Ride the Bellarine – End Polio Now project with both money and volunteers.
Unfortunately, the vexed problem of membership hasn’t been solved and we finish the year smaller than we started. It is wonderful however, to be able to induct 2 new members into our Club tonight.
Our fundraising has again been very successful our 2 main sources – the dinner auction and BBQ’s.
As a consequence we have been able to distribute in excess of $34000 to very worthy local and overseas causes. I am not going to list them all but …..We were the major donor enabling a special chair to be purchased for a child at Grovedale PS suffering cerebral palsy. We have made donations to Mt Duneed PS. Samaritan House, Pedal for Prostrate and many others. We continue to support young people to participate in RYLA, Sci and Engineering Challenge, Youth Exchange and NYSF. We have made donations to Rotary Foundation, Interplast and ROMAC. Following the Fiji cyclone we donated to RAWCS and Shelterbox.
At our board meeting last week we also approved a donation to the cause which PDG Jane Cox and now Gaye Lamont have been advocating. Gaye would you please come forward and accept our donation to Australian Rotary Health – Indigenous Scholars program.
This year marked the end of a successful project with the RC of Pokhara-Fishtail. It was great that Paul and Leon were able to travel to Nepal for the handover of the water project to the Janesewa Sanskrit Secondary School. We did not have much to do with the project following the completion of the grant application and we are indebted to the members of the Pokhara-Fishtail RC and especially project manager Binod Koirala for their supervision of the project.
A significant project undertaken this year was the chartering of the Grovedale/Marshall Probus Club which is now a growing and active group.
Thank you to all members of the Club for their participation this year. Each and every one makes their contribution in small ways by taking a turn on the BBQ roster, cycle marshalling, collecting auction goods to assuming bigger roles eg Director on the Board, program, attendance officer, maintaining the bar, preparing the blue book. As I said last year, I continue to be in awe of the generosity of time, actions and money of all our members and friends.
And now I hand over to Bill! I have enjoyed the opportunity to be fully involved in Rotary for the year but am looking forward to transferring to him the pres.grovedalerotary@gmail .com email address and also joining the exodus of members heading north for a few weeks. Good luck Bill and Devi. I wish you a satisfying and successful year.
AWARDS:
As is traditional, I would like to make some special presentations to recognise particular contributions of some people within the Club.
Last year, our successful dinner auction was ‘double handedly’ organised by Paul and Rhonda Desbrowe-Annear. The rest of us did help by collecting goods and services to be auctioned and setting up on the day – but the work load shouldered by Paul and Rhonda was enormous. Paul and Rhonda are currently enjoying the warmth of Bali but when they return I will present them with PHF Sapphire 2 and Sapphire 1 In recognition of their efforts in arranging the dinner auction.
Another member who makes a very significant contribution to our Club is treasurer Ken Wright. I think this was his 10th year as Treasurer. However, I think that his extra Rotary commitment should also be acknowledged. As our Treasurer, Ken found himself treasurer of the Grovedale/Marshall Probus Club during the formation stages. Ken has been our Youth exchange counsellor for a number of years – and is currently ‘in charge of’ Bella Cooke in Germany and was counsellor for Lily who applied for Youth Exchange this year. Ken is also treasurer of the Bowelscan committee and I know that this also is a significant time commitment. Ken is also a ‘grey nomad’ and is travelling in NSW. When he returns I would also like to recognise Ken’s efforts with a PHF Sapphire.
Another very significant project which was brought to fruition in November last year was the Gifting Program. This was an initiative of Pam Hook and she designed and had printed, the cards and brochures which enable donations to be made to Rotary Foundation or other Rotary causes eg Shelterbox in lieu of flowers (funerals) or presents (Christmas and birthdays). This project took nearly 3 years to develop and I would like to congratulate Pam on her efforts by presenting her with PHF Sapphire.
I urge all members and friends of the Club to remember the gifting program when contemplating Christmas and birthday presents for those ‘who have everything’ or in remembrance of a person who may have died.
Lastly, the Barry Rogers Rotarian of the Year Award goes to the person, I believe to be the hardest working member of the Club – Bob Arnup. Bob has organised 11 Aldi BBQ’s and 5(?) Bunnings BBQs – from sorting out the rosters, purchasing the sausages and onions, organising the equipment to being ‘on deck’ for hours every BBQ… and no matter how tired he feels, he cheerfully works on! The other role which Bob assumes reliably every week, is that of Club photographer. Thank you Bob for the huge contribution which you have made to fundraising and PR.

RYDA Geelong Pilot Program

- It is run outside the school.
- Practical driving demonstrations of stopping distances – seeing a car stop (and hit a “pedestrian”) is much more effective than being told facts and figures.
- Genevieve’s Story – the impact on family, friends and community of a road death.
- Hearing a crash survivor talk about the impact on their life.
- The date has been pushed back from Monday June 6 to Thursday August 4 or 11 to give us time to finalise funding and also to invite potential facilitators and sponsors to attend.
- All secondary schools have been contacted, 9 have expressed interest and 6 have replied with firm numbers of students they would like to bring:
- Geelong Lutheran College 22
- St Josephs College 34
- Clonard College 15
- Bellarine Secondary College 21 + Year 11 cohort if successful
- North Geelong Secondary College 24
- Thomas Carr College Tarneit 15 Total 131
- When the date and cost have been finalised we will again contact the other schools.
- RYDA will cost approximately $3600. This initial program is more costly than usual as presenters are travelling from Melbourne. In the future it is hoped that the program will be almost self-supporting.
- A grant for $2000 has been applied for from the COGG. We will hear the outcome at the end of May.
- Sponsorship has been sought from several Geelong businesses and organisations which advertise their support of community programs, and also the TAC. We have not had any success as yet. However, we are still awaiting some replies and will seek further sponsors prior to the first program.
- Several Rotary Clubs have indicated they will support RYDA if necessary.
- Corio Bay, Drysdale, Geelong West, Grovedale, Lara and Torquay $200 each, Queenscliffe $200 - $500 if needed, Geelong $500.
- Total of $1900 - $2200. Thank you!
- Our aim is for sponsorships and donations to total a minimum of $2600 to keep student fees to $10.
- Money of course.
- A volunteer from each club to help on the day and have a look at the program.
- Potential ongoing sponsors – if you have any contacts please let us know.
- Local facilitators – driving instructors, teachers, youth workers, emergency services personnel etc. If you know of anyone who might be interested please let us know.
- Committee members – thanks Adrian Schmidt from Ocean Grove and Russell Campbell from Corio Bay who have already volunteered to be school liason (sorry I forgot to mention you at the meeting!!).
- Develop ongoing sponsorship partnerships
- Local facilitators
- Equipment – laptops & projection equipment, safety bollards & cones (to borrow or purchase)

President's Report
Meeting 11 May 2016.
Last night we had a terrific meeting at which we heard how Rotary can enrich lives. We had a near maximum attendance – the best for a year!
Unfortunately, Graham Perkins has a back injury and is confined to bed for 4 weeks. We do wish him well for a full recovery ASAP.
We welcomed Rotaractors - Rafe, Keedan and Keeley. We sponsored Rafe and Keedan for RYLA this year and both said that RYLA had lived up to the reports of previous attendees and that they will recommend it to others as a life changing experience. Keedan said that RYLA gave him the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people and form strong bonds. They had talked about their passions, goals, leadership and were encouraged to step out of their comfort zone. It had even led to him cleaning his bedroom immediately on his return! Rafe had been challenged to consider how to be a leader in the community, and to how to make a positive contribution and enact changes in life. She said that the support of the RYLA community was/will be important. The both thanked the club for providing the opportunity to attend RYLA.
Our guest speakers were Paul and Leon who have just returned from Nepal and Joe who has returned from Italy.
Paul and Leon travelled to Nepal to visit our Janasewa Sanskrit HSS, Huwas water project and attend the handover to the school and community. Paul and Leon showed photos of the hair raising road trip to the school , the handover ceremony and the tank and toilet blocks which are part of the project. Paul also presented $500 worth of Days for Girls personal hygiene packs. Leon stressed just how valuable and life changing our input into the school and community has been. They had both enjoyed the hospitality of the Pokhara-Fishtail RC. Leon had unfortunately fallen ill in Nepal and had first hand experience of the hospital system. Time did not permit Paul and Leon from telling us about the remainder of their trip – trekking, Chitwan NP.
Joe had spent 4 weeks in Italy visiting his homeland Abruzzo and Rome. Joe went to Rome to attend the Jubilee for Rotarians and the highlight was a Papal mass on the 30th April. Joe said that the crowds were challenging - he had to wait 4 hours in a queue to register! There were 9000 Rotarians who joined 91000 others for the mass. But it was obvious from the passion and emotion with which Joe described his visit to St Peter’s, Sistine Chapel, other churches, the Colosseum etc that it had been all worthwhile. And Joe somehow managed to see the Pope at just 3 metres.
Thanks go to Ken, Bill and Greg who attended District Assembly on the 1st May.
Thanks also to Ray and Bev (and friends), Graeme and Bev, Ash and Eva who attended the fabulous Rotaract afternoon tea on the 1st May.
Invitations:
Volunteers required for the Red Shield Appeal IGA Grovedale Static collection point on the 28th/29th May. Please contact Christine if you are able to help.
Barwon Health Volunteer Services – launch of new patient transport vehicles. Nibbles and drinks, 6 – 8pm St Mary’s Hall. June 9th. All welcome. Let me know if you are attending and I will RSVP on behalf of the Club.
District Changeover lunch – 26th June, at Truffleduck. Cost $65 pp. All invited, let me know if you are interested and I will forward the registration information.
I look forward to seeing most of you for our Joint meeting at the Davidson Restaurant next week.
Have a good week

The Gifting Program is now fully operational as of Christmas 2015.
There is a range of cards available that can he sent out to acknowledge donations made on behalf of a recipient for occasions throughout the year, such as anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, bereavements and Christmas.
Some donations were made via the program last Christmas, and a few since. The program will now be publicised via visits to other Rotary Clubs, Rotaract, Presidents Meeting and other similar groups, to encourage and hopefully develop more widespread use.

Attended by Lindsay Dixon. Peter Codd, and Sandy Kee.
We discussed the donation to the homeless team which visited our meeting earlier and recommended the donation of a deepfreeze unit, which was asked for by the speaker’ The board may seem fit to donate other moneys if so desired. Other discussions were around continuing the leftovers from the previous year that were not completed.
Fundraising - Paul D.
We mainly spoke about the dinner auction as this is our major fundraiser and that we all need to get our tables and sponsors in and get numbers to Paul as soon as possible.

Rotary Foundation Pam Hook.
2014 -15:
Club members continued to give generously to Rotary Foundation through The Centurion Program, each member contributing $100 via weekly meetings. Further funds have also been raised at regular Aldi BBQ's throughout the year from donations from passing public and customers.
Additional contributions have been made by individual Club members and some fines sessions designated specifically for Foundation.
The major project for the past year was the introduction of a 'Gifting Program', with work being done to identify and address the various components of the scheme in order to formulate it for public presentation.
This program works by individuals making a donation to Rotary Foundation on behalf of another person instead of giving a traditional gift. The recipient then receives a card from the Club indicating this donation has been made in place of the usual 'concrete' gift. Although obviously used for Christmas gifts, it is envisaged that its use will extend to gifts for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or as remembrances of people who have died, instead of flowers. The system has been used on a trial basis within our club throughout the year, with individual members and the Club making such donations on behalf of those who have been married and to the families of those who have died from amongst us, in addition to some use of the program between members last Christmas.
The Board has allocated funds for the design and printing of leaflets so that the Gifting Program can be advertised in the community shortly, and in time to take advantage of the coming Christmas gift giving season for its implementation. Consultations with the printer are in progress at present.
2015 - 16:
The Gifting Program will initially operate from our Club but efforts will be made to encourage other Clubs to adopt the program, as we see potential for success at District level.
Later in the year it is intended to investigate the possibility of initiating a
Workplace Giving Scheme, seeking to encourage regular donations to Rotary Foundation from employees at some of Geelong's many businesses, through employee payrolls. This is seen as a possible source of reliable and continuous donations to Rotary Foundation as well as helping to raise Rotary's profile in the community and awareness of the organization's operation.

Fundraising Projects
Youth And Vocational Services
- Road Safety Program The Committee discussed the request from Wayne Pecar regarding Club support for the RYDA program to be used in the Geelong area. We agreed to offer in principle agreement dependent on costs and acceptance from schools.
- International Youth Night Following a suggestion from a member, the Committee would like to organize a night when inbound 2015 and outbound 2016 exchange students could socialize and our members could learn of their experiences and expectations. The proposed date is Wednesday 24th November if arrangements can be made.
- Vocation There has been difficulty in finding suitable venues which are able to offer after work hour visits. Possible to access a list from other Clubs via ADG.
- RYLA/RYPEN Club has agreed to support both programs again this year. 2 names offered for RYLA already, following this year program.
- Academic/Achievement Awards Awards will again be made to both Grovedale College and the Geelong Lutheran College. These are for both success in academic and general achievement, valued at $1000 for each school.
- National Youth Science Forum Disappointing to learn that there were no suitable applicants from schools in our area. The Club has previously given support and is willing to do so again. Need for more contact with staff? Costs? Process?
- Mock Job Interviews Members attended both Grovedale College (Year 9) and GLC (Year 11) to provide panels for mock job interviews. Over 130 students attended at GC and 35 at GLC. Hopefully this contact will continue, as it is much appreciated by the schools involved.
- Science and Engineering Challenge – Deakin Members have been encouraged to be involved in this program and the Club would be willing to assist financially if such a request was made by the District Committee.
- Mt Duneed School Following a request from the School Council, the Club made a grant of $1000 towards the costs of ground improvements. Assistance has also been offered to other local schools.
International Service and Rotary Foundation
- A Micro-Loan Scheme run by the Rotary club of Pokhara Fishtail Nepal. This scheme extends financial services to the poor and disadvantaged not reached by the formal financial sector. These are small interest free loans.

- Hearts to Harmony Foundation in Siem Reap Cambodia, run by two girls from Geelong.
- Interplast
- Shelterbox

The fight against Polio
Let’s take a step back in time to 2009…
In the battle of humanity vs polio, in India, polio was definitely winning. That year, more than 700 Indian children were paralysed by the virus – the most cases out of any country in the world. The country faced so many challenges that some thought it would be the last place on Earth where polio would be stopped. But this weekend India passed two years without a single case!
Celebrate India’s success by sharing this infographic on Facebook.
The removal of India from the list of polio-endemic countries in 2012 was the cherry on top of an amazing year. Angola stopped the disease for the first time since it was reinfected more than seven years ago, the Democratic Republic of the Congo similarly stamped out its reignited transmission...
And we saw the fewest polio cases in the fewest districts in the fewest countries in history!
But this progress is fragile. Last year's funding shortfall caused vaccination campaigns to be scaled back or cancelled – and as a result we've seen polio spread from Nigeria to cause a case in Niger. With the end of polio within our grasp, we cannot let a lack of political will stop us from creating a polio-free future for all the world's children.
So please share this infographic and ask your friends, family and followers to join you in supporting this cause.
Thanks for all that you do,
Michael, Lauren and the rest of the team at The End of Polio campaign.
