General Update
Update from President Paul.
Paul welcomed all of our visitors including:
  • one of our past members - Paul Vernon who is visiting the club for a few weeks,
  • Ken and Judy Guidoltd from Canada, and
  • Faye Dixon from Encompass Community Services - our guest speaker for the evening.
Paul commented that he was really pleased to see so many club members attending the meeting.  He reminded people of the results of the 2018 members survey (as published in the Board Minutes 31 Oct 18):
  • The pattern of the meetings for this year:
    • First week of the month - optional social night. Location will vary dependant on the event.
    • Second and fourth Wednesdays - regular meeting with Guest Speakers where possible.
    • Third Wednesday of the month - Committee Meetings - planning events etc. We ask that members sit at their committee tables for the evening to ensure ample time is given to discussing Committee ideas and plans.
    • If there is a fifth Wednesday in the month - there will be no meeting
  •  Club members will now be able to contribute to the process of selecting Rotarian of the year. Club members will be asked in April of each year.  The President will make the final call.
  • Club Fines at meetings will continue.
  • Toast.  Instead of the previous formal Toast, the President will open the meeting, welcome members and a toast to Rotary.
Paul wants you all to put your thinking caps on, talk to your contacts and read the Rotary literature for ideas for guest speakers. Please take an active role in doing this, so that we can keep the meetings refreshed and interesting.  This will be a great help to Jordy and Don.

The membership committee is looking into updating the Grovedale Rotary Club promotional brochure.

Committee Reports.
Community Service Report.
Opal Aged Care Garden Beds. It was agreed by the Community Services committee to get pricing on providing above ground wheelchair accessible garden beds for Opal Aged Care in Highton. David Carlyle will get pricing and revisit site.
Opal are prepared to contribute financially.

Foundation 61. Our commitment here is still up in the air. An alternative would be to contribute $5000 to pay for a bed for the year. This would meet more immediate needs of the facility. Bill Trengrove to follow up on this.

Thanks to all who have volunteered for the fundraising event at the Geelong Beer Festival Sat 16th Feb 1230 - 4.00pm (or a bit earlier) - should be fun!
We will be working for 3-4 hours around lunchtime at the beer festival handing out wristbands and glasses. If you would like to attend the beer festival - afterwards -entry will be free to volunteers.  The club will receive $500 for the day.
This is a Great promotional opportunity for our club so please wear your Rotary Shirts and Caps.
Thanks to all those who have volunteered to date - if anyone else would like to help out - please contact Paul.

Don't Stare - be aware presentation by Faye Dixon

Last Wednesday the club was very privileged to have Faye Dixon (Encompass Project Officer) present a very informative and engaging presentation on the different types of disabilities including:  Cerebral Palsy, Mental Illness, Autism, Intellectual Disability, Hearing impairment and  Fragile X syndrome. The takeaway message for us all was to 'understand what people can do rather than what they can't do. The club would like to thank Faye for her time, willingness and enthusiasm to share this message with us.  Remember that these briefings are available to local businesses and if you would like book a presentation contact Encompass on 52223377 or visit the web site: https://www.encompass-cs.org.au/don't-stare-be-aware/

Welcome to our Canadian Rotarian Visitors.
Our club was pleased to host Rotarians Ken and Judy Guidoltd from the Rotary Lake Country Canada. Their club is situated approximately 3 hours east of Vancouver. Ken shared with us that their club has around 25 members. One of their major recent projects has been to fund raise and build a food bank building in their local area.  It was great to meet them - maybe we will see them again at the Beer festival.

Rotary Grants Qualifying Seminar - Geelong Feb 2019
The seminar will be on Sunday 10 February 2019 and hosted by the Rotary Club of Geelong. The venue will be the Geelong RSL, 50 Barwon Heads Road, Belmont and the training will commence at 10 am with a break for lunch and should finish about 3 pm. There is free parking all day.

The registration cost is $25 per Rotarian. There will be Tea/coffee and cake all day. Finger food sandwiches and hot platters for lunch. GWP Rotary Club will refund our members registrations.
Please contact Lesley Goode if you are interested.

This is really important to our club. We need to be more savvy about how to link into the Rotary Grants program. We need members to qualify for the grants to be open to us. No qualified members = No grants. So please consider attending with Lesley in Geelong (easy) 10 Feb.

What's this whoozin????
'whoozin'  is an app that enables us to collect RSVP's to events and meetings in a very easy accessible way. It provides a report for simple administration of these events.
Jordy will be sending you whoozin invites via email.
It is important to know that you have to reply to whoozin to be included in the catering numbers for the meeting or event being advertised.  You are not automatically counted in - you have to reply.  Please respond to whoozin invites as quickly as possible and no later than the Tuesday before the event.  If you do not have access to email - please respond to Rice Village in the usual way.  If you have any questions about whoozin please discuss with Jordy or Cookie.

Meeting Attendance.
If you are unable to access 'whoozin' please remember to inform  RICE VILLAGE  by Tuesday prior to the meeting if not attending to stop food waste and the unnecessary effort our  volunteers. Check blue book for the number or use the app!
