Board Meeting Highlights
At the last Board meeting John McGibbon provided the following update on Youth & Vocational Services:
  • Deborah Walker, a year 11 student from Belmont High has been successful in her application to attend the national Youth Science Forum held in Canberra in January 2018. The Club has agreed to pay $1000 towards the cost of her attending.(total 0ver $3000)
  • Corey Lionis, a Year 9 student from Geelong Lutheran College will be attending the ConocoPhillips Science Experience to be held in Ballarat in the September School holidays. The Club has agreed to pay $150 towards Corey's expenses.
  • Mock job interviews at Grovedale College were very successful thanks to volunteers from Grovedale, Torquay and Shepparton! About 160 Year 9 students were interviewed. Everyone commented on what a worthwhile exercise it was - especially the morning tea provided by the College.
Both students will be attending a Club meeting next term to meet with members.

  • Again the Club will be financing end of year academic and citizenship awards at Grovedale College and Geelong Lutheran College. Total cost of these awards will be approximately $2500.
  • Early in November we hope to arrange a repeat visit from the staff and students from Geelong Lutheran College who visited Vanuatu during the last school holidays. The Club contributed $500 towards the cost of materials and construction of chicken coops at a village there.
  • A member is trying to organize a visit to the Mission for Seamen in North Shore. Hopefully this might occur in November, with a meal afterwards.
Victorian Police Mentoring Program
This Program is a project established by Rotary Club of Melbourne in conjunction with Victoria Police and the Business Community. It has been going for some years and the success of the mentoring program means it is endorsed at District level. The project aims to link senior Victorian police officers to the community and business by providing mentors from the business sector and Rotary for a year.
Our very own Peter Codd has been successful in being selected a mentor for a local police officer. Well done Peter, from all of us - it is a great opportunity to promote the club within the Police Force.
Auction Night Update
Well we are fast getting to the pointy end of our Rotary year with our Dinner Auction happening on Fri Oct 13th @ Dromoland House in Pako.  Please note that Domoland House is now called Capri Receptions. Paul needs us all to seek as many donations as possible. Also next week Paul is seeking to confirm table numbers so please have these ready to go.  It's shaping up to be a really great night - new venue and band and the theme is Á Touch of Black'.  Let's see if we can beat the funds we raised last year!  There is no reason why not - with everyone's support.
Westpac Community Grants
Every year Westpac provides 100 Community Grants to organisations working within our communities supporting disadvantaged. This year in line with their Bicentennial year Westpac doubled the number of community grants to 200.
Christine Howard supported the application of OneCare Geelong this year and they were fortunate enough to receive a grant. Christine becomes their ambassador for the coming year. Our club will provide an opportunity to hear from OneCare and the work they do for the local community.

Other Geelong grant recipients for 2017 were the Geelong Food Relief Centre and Samaritan House in Newcomb. Christine encouraged us all to think about organisations which could apply for these grants next year. For more information see Christine Howard.

Humans in Geelong Expo

We received an email from Kathy Ryan Corio Bay RC promoting the 'Humans in Geelong (HUGS)Expo' which will be held at Deakin Waterfront Cafe, Sunday 8th October 10am-3pm. Event is free - just a gold coin entry donation.
HUGS publishes internet and facebook stories about the good things happening in our local community.  The expo will showcase some of the organisations and individuals which have been published by HUGS in the past 12 months.
Of interest is Stephanie Woollard, a Rotary Peace Scholar who has created the International aid organisation 'Seven Women'. Seven Women helps women in Nepal with practical production skills such as sewing, growing vegetables as well as literacy and money management skills.
So why not think about putting this in your diary.  Sounds like a great day.
