MEMBER NEWS

What a tremendous use of modern technology last week when we were able to join Madu in Calcutta, India, when she made a traditional Indian Rice Pudding. The fellowship was enjoyed by everyone. We hope that the exercise might be repeated in the future when Madu takes us through the production of a traditional Indian Chicken curry! (Davis's idea!)
Thank you Lesley for your organization of the night with Madu and also for sending out the photos to everyone.
Trish, Jan, and Lesley all cooked the rice pudding. From their comments (and David's) it tasted great.

Ken - sale of raffle tickets have gone well so far. Last week for people to purchase them. To be drawn at Changeover next week.

David - both David and Trish are spending the week away. Let's hope they have a safe and enjoyable time.

Pam - her daughter took her up to Melbourne last Sunday for surgery at Royal Women's Hospital but was told she was not required for another week. Good luck with everything this time!

Perko - has plenty of firewood available for anyone who needs it. Please contact him if you are interested or know of anyone who might benefit from his generosity.

Darren Deren - someone remarked that he was now working for Barwon Timber? Good luck Darren!

Joe's Quote - Most of us will never do great things but we can do small things in a great way.

VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Last Sunday and Monday I (Lesley) ‘attended’ the General Sessions of the International Convention.
Unfortunately I wasn’t in the balmy convention centre in Honolulu but rather in my study in the middle of the night, wrapped in my blanket.
As at all RI Conventions the speakers were highly credentialed people eg Antonio Guterres, Sec-General UN; Christopher Elias, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Rebecca Martin, US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention; Mark Danial Maloney, RI President and his successors.
But what did I learn.
  • Rotary was influential in establishing the UN 75 years ago and continues to work in partnership with them on many causes.
  • Rotary Foundation has distributed US$14 million for COVID related projects. Former RI President Ravi Ravindran was able to secure a huge Global Grant to upgrade a research facility for COVID response in Sri Lanka in 48 hours!
  • Polio infrastructure in many countries is now being used in COVID response eg laboratory health workers, contact tracing, communication and data collection
  • Rotary Foundation has received US$336 million this year – the goal was US$400 million.
  • To grow Rotary we must adopt more flexible meeting models. A couple of examples – 2 US clubs making environmental projects their focus, a British coffee club which meets fortnightly on a Sunday morning. Both examples are attracting younger members.
  • Incoming RI President Holger Knaack – growing Rotary means: engaging current members, service above self, making and keeping friends through fellowship, diversity and embracing Rotaract.
  • President Nominee 21-22 is Shekkar Mehta from Calcutta, India.
  • Fantastic entertainment was provided by Australian pop opera group Aria and Jake Shimabukuro an Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso.
RI Conventions are much better in person. However, to remind us that Rotary is an international and far reaching service organisation it was (still is possible) good to attend the virtual RI Convention.
