Rotary Club of Grovedale

DinnerAuction

The first Rotary Club of Grovedale Dinner Auction was held on Friday the 15th of August 1979, 5 weeks before the Club was chartered on 21st of September 1979.

The Dinner Auction was the idea of the first Charter President Barry Rogers.  He believed that the Club needed a way of raising money to run our local community and international projects.

The first Auction was held at the Grovedale Hotel, other venues have been Grovedale College, Italian Social Club and for many years at Capri Receptions.

The first auctioneer in 1979 was a Club member and since the 2nd year in 1980 until now Colin Beel has been our main auctioneer raising many valuable funds.

The Dinner Auction has now turned out to be our main yearly fundraiser.

The committee running the Dinner auction has varied over the years and in latter years the Club found it hard to get anyone interested in taking on the mammoth task of organising the auction. In 1997 President Doug Hille made it the task of the President Elect to take on the organization of the auction.

This concept continued until 2002 when it was suggested that the auction should probably go to every 2nd year or drop it altogether.   A few options were discussed but at this stage the current Auction committee seeing the main club fundraiser as too valuable to loose they took over and have been running it since.

The Dinner Auction usually consists of 60 main auction lots and in excess of 100 silent auction lots. A few of the main auction lots that are great money raisers are the dinner for 10,  working bee, wine fridge and house boat.

We get donations thru our members approaching local business and tickets are available from the Club.

This year (2012) the Dinner Auction was held at Capri Receptions on Friday 12th October. Well worth the effort the evening raised over $20,000. Much of this will go toward the Barwon Valley School's new Aquatic Learning Centre.

Thanks to all who participated in this event.
